I came to know Eileen through wedding planning. She is an event designer and I do wedding invitations, so our paths naturally crossed a few times. In 2017, Eileen purchased a couple of our floral scripture calendars and went on her way.
Unexpectedly, Eileen’s mother fell while she was in a steam bath. It was April 15th—her 80th birthday. Over 60% of her body was burned and she was rushed to the critical care unit at Nassau Burn Center near her home on Long Island. Eileen lives here in Knoxville, so as soon as she received this terrifying news, she packed her suitcase to fly out.
“I paused as I was walking out the door. I knew I needed something beautiful for that hospital room. I needed something beautiful because my mom cared about beautiful things. She was an avid floral arranger. I saw your calendar hanging on my wall—I grabbed it and stuffed it into my suitcase.”
When Eileen arrived in the hospital room, she grabbed her calendar and ripped out the pages. She taped them onto the walls: January, February, March, April… all twelve prints were taped around the hospital room. Her mother was not able to communicate; she was in significant pain, and Eileen spent many hours lying in bed with her and talking about the pictures. She read the verses. She talked about the flowers. She ministered to her mother.
Then Eileen noticed something: doctors and nurses were constant in her mom’s room, due to the critical nature of the patient. But, when they came in, they stayed for a while. They would walk around to each page and stand before it and read. Then they would move to the next one, and the next one. One nurse asked, “Where do all these quotes come from?” Eileen answered that they came from the Bible. The nurse responded, “I never knew it says things like this in the Bible.” I love that this woman’s first real encounter with scripture was a print of mine taped to a New York hospital wall.
Eileen’s mom passed away a few weeks later on the fourth of May. We designed a special Memorial Program for her using one of the pages from that calendar. It was the verse that Eileen prayed over her. It was the verse that gave Eileen courage during a dark time. It was her mom’s verse: “The Lord your God is with you. He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”
I tell this story because I want you to know the heart behind what I do. It’s not about selling a calendar—it’s about sharing truth and beauty with people who need it. That’s my heart’s deepest desire. That’s what I want to do more of. And that’s why I’m offering 15% off online orders of our 2019 Floral Scripture Calendar until my next post: because I want you to be reminded of the truth and to share encouragement with those around you.
